Chat rules and guidelines

When chatting, please treat others with respect and do not engage in abusive behavior or post inappropriate language. Please familiarize yourself with the message board policy, which also applies to the chat room. Failure to respect these guidelines will result in suspension of access to chat; repeated violations may result in further disciplinary action.

The general discussion chat room is open at all times and is not moderated. The Foundation does save logs from the chat room and reviews them regularly to ensure that all participants are following the rules and guidelines.

Chat tips

On the main chat page, you can select the "room" where you'd like to chat. Most of the time, the general discussion room will be the only option. After entering the room, you'll see the main chat interface where you can chat with other users. You can send messages by typing in the text box at the bottom and hitting the "Send" button or "Enter" on your keyboard. The "Newline" button allows you to insert a carriage return in your message.

On the right, you'll see a list of the members logged into the room. By clicking on any member's name, you can initiate a private chat with that person, meaning you will be able to send messages to each other that no one else can see. Other members can start private chats with you, as well. Note: After sending a private message, you must click on "All users" at the top of the members list to resume posting to the room at large.

Each chat event will be held in its own room, which you'll see when you visit the chat page at the scheduled time. These chats will be moderated, meaning that messages you enter will not appear to others until they're approved by the moderator. This can be confusing, because you will be able to see your messages on your own screen even before they are approved. The moderator's name will appear bold and green.

For more help with chat, click on the "Help" button in the upper right corner of the window.
